Dr Fergus McCabe recognition in Governor General's Bravery Awards

Dr Fergus McCabe has been recognised today, 1st September, and National Wattle Day 2026, with a Commendation for Brave Conduct in the Governor Generals Bravery Awards. The award has been given in recognition of his actions to intervene and help a fellow doctor at the practice in 2023.

Dr McCabe has released the following statement to the media and was interviewed on ABC Perth radio station on the 1st September 2026. 

"I am deeply honoured to receive this award, but the response that day was a collective one. The patient who was consulting with Dr Chaney showed exceptional courage by remaining with her and helping to protect her. Our doctors and staff acted together—calmly, professionally and without hesitation—to de-escalate the situation and safeguard everyone present. I am also grateful for the rapid response of police.

This recognition belongs to all those who stepped forward. When good people refuse to look away, they can prevent harm and protect others.

Above all, violence against women—in any setting and in any form—is never acceptable. Its consequences extend far beyond the immediate and visible injuries. We all share a responsibility to challenge such violence, support those affected and never look the other way."
